The Problem

When a grow fails, people often photograph the final visible damage but lose the events that preceded it: slow colonization, excess moisture, a temperature shift, questionable spawn, a handling event, or contamination in a related batch. Without that history, every failure feels isolated and prevention becomes guesswork.

How a real mycologist would think about it

Add the suspicious change to the grow where it occurred. Record what you can observe without forcing a diagnosis, isolate when appropriate, and return with another update to show whether it spread or changed. Over time, your records preserve the evidence needed to compare failures with successful grows.

Why contamination needs a timeline

Visible contamination may appear late in a process that started earlier. A grow history can preserve colonization speed, moisture changes, environmental conditions and handling events that are no longer obvious in the final photograph. This does not automatically establish causation, but it gives troubleshooting a more reliable starting point.

Record observations before labels

Write what you can see or smell: colour, texture, location, speed of spread and whether the material looks dusty, wet or slimy. A label such as Trichoderma can be revised; a dated description and photograph remain useful evidence. Never open a potentially sporulating container indoors merely to collect more data.

Compare systems, not just individual failures

If contamination returns, compare what the affected grows shared: culture source, grain preparation, sterilization cycle, substrate batch, inoculation session, workspace, temperature and moisture. Successful grows made under similar conditions are equally important because they help narrow which factors were actually different.

Treat a spreading green patch as potentially sporulating contamination: avoid opening it in the grow area and isolate the sealed bag first. Photograph the patch through the bag, note its size and location, any smell detectable without opening, the bag’s stage, and when you first noticed slowed colonization. Those observations cannot prove the organism, but they preserve useful evidence and reduce the chance of exposing other grows while you decide how to dispose of or escalate it.
